President’s Report:
This year it gave much pleasure to welcome Calder Fly Fishers to the Council.

Attendance at meetings has increased and it is pleasing to see the renewed involvement of many clubs and the effort by delegates to attend meetings whenever possible. Unfortunately the April meeting, Presidents weekend, did not have a quorum and did not go ahead but other meetings during the year have generally had better participation then previous years. For some club delegates distance and travel time makes attending meetings difficult or almost impossible. Recognising this we introduced telephone conferencing for members who find it too difficult to attend in person. Delegates joined the meetings by conference call in March, July and August and all said the experience was different but worthwhile..

I wish to thank Chris Doody for arranging the conference facility and encourage all delegates to take advantage of it when attendance in person is not possible for any meeting.

The Web site still need some work and updating mainly due to my lack of expertise with Wordpress and posting notices and articles in the right areas. Any offers of assistance in will be gratefully accepted.

We also have a CVFFC Facebook page thanks to Anthony McGrath.

In particular I wish to acknowledge the work by Graham Godber in reviewing our Constitution and proposing an amended version. This was an extremely challenging and we are all grateful to Graham for this.

Once again the 4X4 & Fishing show demonstrated that a combined effort produces much better results than an individual one. Yarra Valley expresses appreciation to all clubs that helped with the event and hope each club found it a worthwhile experience. This year the set-up of the casting lane and information and fly tying stand was much better than previous years, the location was ideal, right at the main entry. We attracted much more interest than any other time, especially with kids, thanks to the innovative “marketing” by the guys from Ballarat with casting for “Freddos”. Show organisers were so impressed with our efforts that they immediately booked us in for 2015 show.

Feedback to Yarra Valley is most welcome as improvements can always be made. Use CVFFC meetings and communications to put forward suggestions. The aim is to make this event stand truly representative of all fly fishing clubs across Victoria. Overall we need ideas for promoting fly fishing, improving habitat & access, and encouraging children & teenagers, families and those sections of the community not traditionally involved in recreational fishing to become passionate as we are for fly fishing. Share you club’s initiatives with all the clubs so we can grow the fly fishing fraternity.

Peter Te Hennepe and I represented the Council as delegates to VRFish meetings for the year and I continued as CVFFC representative at The Round Table Forum. I also represented the Council at the Trout Reference Group meetings held at Snobs Creek hatchery.
It is important that we retain these representations as they provide direct avenues for fly fishers to the decision and policy makers that impact on recreational angling.
I encourage all member clubs and delegates to raise your local issues at Council meetings, or at any other time. CVFFC support for projects or funding or direct lobbying through VRFish and Roundtable can lend more weight than clubs acting individually.

Thank you to our Secretary/Treasurer Christopher Collins, City Vice President Mark Thomas and Country Vice President Chris Doody for the assistance and efforts during the past year. Especially, thank you to all delegates who have given their time and effort to attend meetings either in person on by conference call.

Thank you all for attending today.

General Business

1.    Discussion of CVFFC meeting attendance and responses to mail outs.
i) Delegates discussed the general lack of attendance at meetings and possible reasons noting that for most delegates distance to venues will always be an issue preventing some from attending. It was considered travel times up to two hours were reasonable but not more. Options for further consideration:
- more regional locations
- greater use of telephone conferencing

ii)  Lack of response to email requests for input on a variety of issues. Due to short time lines or lack of interest, most clubs do not respond to requests for input to form CVFFC position on certain relevant topics ( Goulburn & pondage stocking proposal, King River stocking proposal, etc)
Up to date email contacts at every club are essential to get information to the right people for circulation within each member club. Also club Executive Committees may need to make decisions on behalf of members when time is short and issues are of urgent nature. We often only become aware of issues with 14 days or less to act, leaving little or no time to pass through committees and general meetings.
Circulation of a spread sheet noting clubs responding may encourage greater input.                        Action P Te Hennepe

iii) Suggestion for CVFFC executive  & other willing delegates to make presentations at all member clubs and potential ember clubs explaining CVFFC mission and purpose

2.    CVFFC Web Site Update – Quotes received in vicinity of $3500 considered too expensive.
Facebook & Drop Box are effect communication tools, but many members are not familiar or do not have access to these, although this should not deter us from utilising as much as possible.
A simple web site is still considered necessary. PT agreed to follow up with all member clubs for accurate & up dated contact details. PT will then obtain quotes for a basic web site in time for AGM.

Action: P Te Hennepe

3.    Proposed removal of Closed Season SW Rivers
All Member Clubs input is against this proposal. Peter Te Hennepe will attend VRFish convened special meeting to convey CVFFC  position

4.    Recognition of Service Award to the CVFFC

Nominations received for CVFFC Outstanding Service Award

Meeting closed 12:05 pm

Next meeting: Saturday 26thh September at Mansfield & District Fly Fishers.

Trout stocking delivers again for inland anglers

Victorian trout anglers continued to enjoy outstanding fishing last year thanks in large part to
the Department of Primary Industries’ annual stocking program.
Fisheries Victoria acting Executive Director, Travis Dowling, said more than 636,000 trout and
salmon were released into 140 waters during the year to improve fishing opportunities for
freshwater anglers across the state.

Mr Dowling said most of the stocked trout were grown at the department’s Snobs Creek
hatchery, near Eildon, using funds derived from the sale of recreational fishing licences.
“The stockings included nearly 75,000 catchable size rainbow trout that were released for the
second and third term school holidays, mainly into small lakes in suburbs and towns,” Mr
Dowling said.

“Those stockings provided children and beginners with a chance to wet a line close to home.
“However, experienced trout anglers reaped the benefits of ongoing stockings in larger lakes
such as Tooliorook, Deep, Elingamite, Burrumbeet, Learmonth and Fyans.
“Large numbers of trout, some weighing more than 2kg each, were caught from several of
these lakes throughout last year.
“One of the standout waters was Lake Toolondo, southwest of Horsham, which recovered
from drought in 2011 and was stocked with brown and rainbow trout soon after, and again in
2012.

“Anglers reported that the stocked trout in Lake Toolondo grew quickly and provided terrific
fishing through winter and spring of last year.

“Lake Wendouree is another water that’s made an outstanding recovery over recent years
thanks to stockings by Fisheries Victoria and the Ballarat Fish Acclimatisation Society.”
Mr Dowling said that warmer summer water temperatures meant the Snobs Creek hatchery
was now turning its attention to growing and stocking native fish such as Murray cod.
“Between now and April, most of our stockings will revolve around native species, with the
2013 trout stocking season to commence around May when water temperatures drop again,”
he said.
